SIMPLE SCALLOPED POTATOES

Ingredients :

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for a baking dish

  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed and peeled

  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, washed, peeled, and thinly sliced

  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk

  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon of coarse salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper



Preparation : Step 1 : Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a shallow 2-quart baking dish and rub with garlic. Layer the potatoes in the dish, overlapping slightly. In a small bowl, combine the milk, cream, salt, and pepper. Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes and dot with butter; cover with foil. Step 2 Place the dish on a rimmed baking sheet and bake on the top rack until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a knife, about 1 hour. Uncover and bake until the top is golden brown in spots, 30 to 40 minutes. Let stand 20 minutes before serving.
